Life

Born in Gerede in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mehmet Şemsi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Şemsi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 18, in 1899/1900, Mehmet Şemsi began work in Gerede, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 475 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Mehmet Şemsi in Gerede, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 475 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Gerede, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
