Life#
Mehmet Muhittin Efendi was born in Serres (Siroz) in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Muhittin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Muhittin began work in Serres in 1883/84, at about 14, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 142 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mehmet Muhittin in Drama as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Muhittin then moved to Elbasan in 1889/90, then back to Drama from 1890 to 1895. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Lahne from 1895 to 1899 and Dojran (Doyran) in 1899/1900.
