Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274), Osman Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Saray Hademesi". Osman Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Osman Nuri in the same office, documents office (Evrak Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 370 in 1904/05, the peak, in the Evrak Kalemi in Istanbul, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less.
