Life#
Mehmet Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Ziya began work in Beyoğlu in 1895/96, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1899/1900 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Ziya in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beyoğlu.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 280 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less.
