Life#
Mehmet Esat Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1885/86, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1889/90, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmet Esat in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beyoğlu.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 320 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 39,600 kuruş, 37 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
