Life

Born in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Ahmet Midhat Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Midhat also wrote English, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 16, in 1895/96, Ahmet Midhat began work in Aleppo (Halep), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1899/1900 and 1900/01, place Ahmet Midhat in Adana as a postal official (Posta Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1899/1900, as Posta Memuru in Adana, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
