Life

Born in Istanbul in 1889/90 (AH 1307), Ahmet Atıf Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Ahmet Atıf had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 16, in 1905/06, Ahmet Atıf began work in Beyoğlu, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Ahmet Atıf in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
