Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Ahmet Mithat Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a chief telegraph director (telgraf başmüdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Mithat also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Berat in 1896/97, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1898/99 to 1905/06 places Ahmet Mithat in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Berat.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 250 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Berat, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less.
