Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, MEHMET HALİT EFENDİ was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1897/98, MEHMET HALİT began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1898/99 to 1902/03 places MEHMET HALİT in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1902/03 in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
