Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet İhsan E was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet İhsan had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1897/98, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 20 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Mehmet İhsan in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the Tescilat Kalemi, where the entries run to 1903/04. The lists have no entry for 1904 to 1907. In 1907/08 the lists place Mehmet İhsan in Edirne, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
Pay rose from 20 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 500 in 1907/08, as Seyyar Memur in Edirne, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over seven years the salaries add up to 11,040 kuruş, 28 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
