Life#
Born in Pristina (Priştine) in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Vamık Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1898/99, Mehmet Vamık began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1898/99 to 1903/04 places Mehmet Vamık in Istanbul, first in the Varidat Kalemi, from 1901/02 in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi) and from 1902/03 as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 125 in 1902/03, as Mekâtib Memuru in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 7,200 kuruş, 20 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Priştineli memurlar" by ÖMER CAN (2023) probably refers to Mehmet Vamık, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
