Life#
Şemsi Efendi was born in Tirana (Tiran) in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Tirana in 1875/76, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Şemsi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Shkodër (İşkodra). Şemsi then moved to Podgorica in 1877/78 and Bar in 1878, then back to Tirana, the birthplace, from 1878 to 1880. The annual lists then follow Şemsi to Berat and Bitola (Manastır) from 1880 to 1885, then Zadrima from 1885 to 1892. Next came Delvine in 1892/93. The last posts were in Berat again from 1894 to 1900, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1895/96 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 600 in 1885/86, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Zadrima, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 139,200 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
