Life#
Mehmet Efendi was born in Bartın in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Preveza (Preveze) in 1871/72, at about 15, paid from the start, on 140 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Mehmet in Preveza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1875/76. The annual lists then follow Mehmet to Istanbul from 1877 to 1895, then Ioannina (Yanya) from 1895 to 1903, with a rise to machine official (Makine Memuru). The last post was in Aydın in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 140 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 600 in 1895/96, as Makine Memuru in Ioannina, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 540 kuruş. In all, 33 years of salary come to 150,720 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
