Life#
Mehmet Nazmi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1878, at about 12, paid from the start, on 120 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Mehmet Nazmi in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a factory official (Fabrika Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. From 1898 to 1903 the annual entries place Mehmet Nazmi in Yıldız Palace (Yıldız Sarayı), with a rise to Elektirik Memuru.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 600 in 1898/99, as Elektirik Memuru in Yıldız Palace, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 26 years of salary come to 121,080 kuruş, 76 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1902/03, the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death). The honours of Mehmet Nazmi were a rank (rütbe) and a medal.
