Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Ömer Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Basmabeyinci". Ömer had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and had some knowledge of French.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1878, at about 16, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. From 1878 to 1884/85 every annual entry places Ömer in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1884/85 in the Babiali Tercume Odasi.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 750 in 1884/85, in the Babiali Tercume Odasi in Istanbul, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1884/85. Ömer received a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi order.
