Life

Born in Keşan in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a director (müdür). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); İsmail Hakkı also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.

Work began in Ma'an (Maan) in 1906/07, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 245 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place İsmail Hakkı in Beirut (Beyrut) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 245 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
