Life#
Born in Istanbul, Yakup Kenan Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Yakup Kenan had nine years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi) and then a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi), and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1902/03 (AH 1320), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Yakup Kenan in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last posts were in Kavala from 1906 to 1908, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 300 in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Kavala, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 11,820 kuruş, 45 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
