Life

Born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Kerim Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mustafa Kerim also wrote French as well as Turkish.

Work began in Istanbul in 1905/06, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Mustafa Kerim in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
