Life#
Salih Selahaddin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1890/91 (AH 1308), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Salih Selahaddin also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Salih Selahaddin began work in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 13, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 70 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Salih Selahaddin in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
