Life#
Ahmet Ağa was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1828/29 (AH 1244) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet began work in Serres (Siroz) in 1859/60, at about 31, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 31 or older. Every annual entry from 1860/61 to 1879/80 places Ahmet in Serres, first as a sergeant (Çavuş), from 1861/62 as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1860/61, as Çavuş in Serres, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 200 kuruş. Over 21 years pay ended below where it began, 142 kuruş against 400; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1879/80.
