Life#
Mühtedi Ali Behçet Efendi was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at the Bulgar Mektebi. Ali Behçet knew four languages, Armenian, Bulgarian, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Plovdiv in 1880/81, at about 31, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 31 or older. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1905/06 places Ali Behçet in the same post, letters official (Mekâtib Memuru), in Istanbul.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Mekâtib Memuru in Istanbul, when one in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
