Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). İbrahim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1897/98 to 1905/06 places İbrahim in the same office, Vezne Kitabeti, in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 250 in 1902/03, in the Vezne Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 18,600 kuruş, 35 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
