Life#
Born in Uşak in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mehmet Adil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Mehmet Adil had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Mehmet Adil as an official (Memur) in Istanbul. The last posts were in Adapazarı and Drama from 1898 to 1902 and Eleftheroupoli (Pravişte) from 1902 to 1904, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1898/99.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 500 in 1902/03, as 3. Müdür in Eleftheroupoli, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 26,880 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
