Life#
Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ziya began work in the Rusumat Kalemi in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1890/91, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Ziya as Rusumat Kolculugu in Thessaloniki, where the entries run to 1893/94. The last posts were in Galata from 1895 to 1901, first as Mulazemet, from 1898/99 as a postal official (Posta Memuru) and from 1899/1900 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 150 kuruş a month in 1890/91, as Rusumat Kolculugu in Thessaloniki, when 5 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over seven years the salaries add up to 10,080 kuruş, 24 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
