Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Sivas in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Tahsin also wrote Turkish and spoke French.
At about 18, in 1888/89, Hasan Tahsin began work in Erzincan, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Hasan Tahsin in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Amasya from 1901 to 1903 and Ceyhan (Hamidiye) in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 495 in 1903/04, as Memur in Ceyhan, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
