Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Süreyya Efendi was the child of an accounts official (muhasebe memuru). Mustafa Süreyya had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878, with Mustafa Süreyya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Thessaloniki (Selanik), where the entries run to 1880/81. From 1881 to 1906 the annual entries place Mustafa Süreyya in Istanbul, the birthplace. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1878 to 700 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 183,420 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
