Life#
Kosti Çaliki Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took seven years, at the Ingiliz Mektebi. Kosti Çaliki knew four languages, English, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, 3 studied at Ingiliz Mektebi.
Kosti Çaliki began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 23, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. From 1887/88 to 1893/94 every annual entry places Kosti Çaliki in Galata, first as an official (Memur), from 1891/92 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru).
