Life#
Mehmet Nazif Efendi was born in Novi Pazar (Yenipazar) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 27, in 1898/99, Mehmet Nazif began work in Novi Pazar, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Mehmet Nazif in Preševo (Preşova) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Nazif back to Novi Pazar, the birthplace, from 1903 to 1906. The last post was in Lisac in 1906/07.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Lisac, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less.
