Life#
Born in Tetovo (Kalkandelen) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Eyüp Sabri Efendi was the child of a policeman (polis). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Eyüp Sabri also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Tetovo in 1886/87, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Eyüp Sabri in Kosova in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti), where the entries run to 1892/93. Eyüp Sabri then moved to Skopje (Üsküp), Bihcova, Peja (İpek) and Pristina (Priştine), four places in nine years, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1893/94. The last posts were in Novi Pazar (Yenipazar) from 1902 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 650 in 1902/03, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Novi Pazar, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
