Life#
Musa Kazım Efendi was born in Tetovo (Kalkandelen) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Musa Kazım also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Tetovo in 1894/95, at about 18, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Musa Kazım in Resen (Resne) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Durrës (Dıraç) from 1902 to 1905 and Tetovo, the birthplace, in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 390 in 1905/06, as Müdür Vekili in Tetovo, when 37 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 16,680 kuruş, 57 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
