Life#
Mehmet Necip Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Muhacirin Memuru". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 23, in 1886/87, Mehmet Necip began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Mehmet Necip in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1891/92. The last posts were in Sivas in 1892/93 and Karadeniz Ereğli in 1893/94.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 400 in 1893/94, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Karadeniz Ereğli, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less.
