Life

Born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Mehmet Faik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Bozdoğan in 1896/97, at about 16, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Mehmet Faik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Bitola (Manastır).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Bitola, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 9,000 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
