Life

Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293), Yunus Rasim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Yunus Rasim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 21, in 1897/98, Yunus Rasim began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Yunus Rasim as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Kütahya, where the entries run to 1901/02. Yunus Rasim then moved back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1902 to 1904. The last posts were in Edirne from 1904 to 1906.

The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 600 in 1904/05, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Edirne, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
