Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1890/91, the official began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Emirgan, where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Malko Tarnovo (Tırnovacık) from 1902 to 1905 and Beit She'an (Beysan) in 1906/07, with a rise to official (Memur) in 1902/03 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 800 in 1904/05, as 2. Müdür in Malko Tarnovo, when four in five paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 600 kuruş. In all, nine years of salary come to 26,400 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
