Life#
Born in Darıca in 1857/58 (AH 1274), Vasil Rüstem Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at the Rum Ibtidai Mektebi; Vasil Rüstem also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish and had some knowledge of French.
Work began in the postal service (Posta) in Darıca in 1876/77, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Vasil Rüstem in Darıca, the birthplace, as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), where the entries run to 1885/86, with a rise to a post in the custody of the cash chest (Sandık Emaneti) in 1885/86. The last posts were in Heybeliada and Princes' Islands (Adalar) from 1886 to 1889 and Darıca again from 1890 to 1892.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 600 in 1885/86, the peak, in the Sandık Emaneti in Darıca, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1891/92.
