Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Tayyar Efendi was the child of a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Tayyar also attended the telegraph school.
Tayyar began work in Istanbul in 1865/66, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Tayyar in Volos (Golos) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Tayyar then moved to eight places in 18 years, with a rise to registry clerk (Mukayyit) in 1872/73 and to Muhabere Memuru in 1878. For 1874 to 1878 the lists have no entry. From 1887 to 1904 every annual entry places Tayyar in Çatalca. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 600 in 1878, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Maslak, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 30 years the salaries add up to 183,120 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
