Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Mehmet Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Work began in Siirt in 1886/87, at about 15, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Mehmet Şükrü in Cizre as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Şükrü back to Diyarbakır, the birthplace, from 1894 to 1904. The last post was in Silvan in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 400 in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05. Mehmet Şükrü probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerinde Diyarbekirli yöneticiler" by İSHAK ŞİMŞEK (2013) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
