Life#
Born in Bandırma in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mahir Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mahir also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Mahir began work in Istanbul in 1897/98, at about 24, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Mahir as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru) in Istanbul. Mahir then moved to Galata from 1898 to 1901, with a rise to letters official (Mekâtib Memuru) in 1898/99. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1901 to 1906.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 400 in 1898/99, as Mekâtib Memuru in Galata, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
