Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Osman Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1897/98, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Osman Ziya in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last post was in Bursa in 1906/07, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 250 in 1906/07, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Bursa, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less.
