Life

Born in Malatya in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Halis Efendi was the child of a chief telegraph director (telgraf başmüdürü). Ahmet Halis had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Konya in 1898/99, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1900/01 and 1901/02, place Ahmet Halis in Konya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Konya, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1901/02. Ahmet Halis probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerine göre Malatya doğumlu memurlar: 1879-1909" by RAMAZAN ÇELEM (2014) (the name and the birthplace agree).
