Life#
Born in Veles (Köprülü) in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Mustafa Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Deavi Katibi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa Nuri began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Veles in 1876/77, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Mustafa Nuri in Mitrovica (Mitroviça) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). For 1878 to 1879 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Štip (İştip) from 1879 to 1881 and Veles, the birthplace, in 1881/82.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78, as Muhabere Memuru in Mitrovica, when 16 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 16,800 kuruş, 67 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1881/82.
