Life#
Mehmet Fevzi Efendi was born in Serres (Siroz) in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Work began in Sidirokastro (Demirhisar) in 1892/93, at about 12, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmet Fevzi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Serres, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1897/98. Next came Adana, Serres and Kir from 1899 to 1903, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1902/03. The last post was in Serres again in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 500 in 1902/03, as 3. Müdür in Kir, when half the paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 440 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
