Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275), İsmail Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Şükrü also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1873/74, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places İsmail Şükrü in Niš (Niş) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). İsmail Şükrü then moved to Sofia (Sofya) and Izmir (İzmir) from 1876 to 1880, then Çanakkale from 1880 to 1886, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1882/83. For 1878 to 1879 the lists have no entry. From 1886 to 1899 the annual entries place İsmail Şükrü in Demirci, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 600 in 1877/78, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Sofia, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 147,840 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned.
