Life#
Yusuf Efendi was born in Harput in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Yusuf began work in Erzurum in 1884/85, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Yusuf as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aydın. Next came Erzurum from 1889 to 1896. The last posts were in İspir from 1896 to 1899 and Tortum from 1899 to 1901.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 600 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzurum, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 540 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1900/01. An entry in "Sicill-i ahvâl defterlerine göre Harputlu devlet adamları" by ENES MUTLUAY (2018) probably refers to Yusuf, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and second number agree.
