Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Aziz Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Aziz also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1886/87, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Aziz in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1893/94. Aziz then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1894 to 1901, with a rise to a post in the office for important affairs (Mühimme Kalemi). The last posts were in Edirne from 1901 to 1903 and Istanbul again in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, in the Mühimme Kalemi in Thessaloniki, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
