Life#
Hasan Aşir Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 13, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 385 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Hasan Aşir in Prizren as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1884/85. The annual lists then follow Hasan Aşir to Trgovište (Tırgovişte) from 1885 to 1889, then Kopres from 1889 to 1894. The last posts were in Kastoria (Kesriye) from 1894 to 1898.
Pay rose from 385 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 600 in 1889/90, as Muhabere Memuru in Kopres, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1897/98; the list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death).
