Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mahmut Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mahmut Ziya began work in Babaeski (Baba-yı Atik) in 1891/92, at about 18, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mahmut Ziya in Babaeski as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Istanbul in 1892/93. From 1893 to 1906 the annual entries place Mahmut Ziya in Mabeyni humayun.
