Life#
Born in Pasinler (Hasankale) in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Hüseyin Haki Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Hüseyin Haki had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Pasinler in 1887/88, at about 21, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Hüseyin Haki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid). Hüseyin Haki then moved to Siirt from 1898 to 1902. The last posts were in Narman (Namervan) from 1902 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 500 in 1902/03, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Narman, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
