Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmed Rüşdü Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmed Rüşdü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1893/94, Mehmed Rüşdü began work in Erzurum, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Mehmed Rüşdü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid), where the entries run to 1896/97. Mehmed Rüşdü then moved back to Erzurum, the birthplace, from 1897 to 1899. The last posts were in Genç from 1899 to 1902, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 540 in 1899/1900, as 3. Müdür in Genç, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
