Life

Born in Silistra (Silistre) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Süleyman Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Süleyman also wrote Bulgarian, French and Turkish.

At about 30, in 1905/06, Süleyman began work in Eskişehir, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 30 or older. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Süleyman in Eskişehir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
